Family Solutions Home Care was built from experience — not from a business plan, but from a mother’s journey.
Julie McGill earned her Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from Purdue Fort Wayne and a Master of Arts in Actuarial Science from Ball State University. She passed two actuarial exams, poised for a career in a highly technical field. But when her son was born with complex disabilities, her path shifted almost overnight.
Initially, the extent of support her son would need was unclear. Like many parents, Julie noticed missed milestones, embarking on a search for answers. What followed was a long journey of doctor visits, therapy sessions, specialist evaluations — and sleepless nights filled with uncertainty. She spent countless hours researching, advocating, and hoping for clarity. Over time, it became heartbreakingly clear that her son would require full-time, lifelong care, needing hands-on support with every aspect of daily life: mobility, hygiene, communication, medical routines, and safety.
Like so many parents, Julie was thrust into an unfamiliar system riddled with red tape, denials, and shifting rules. Securing her son the care he needed meant learning to fight for it every single day.
Through this lived experience, Julie became an expert in Medicaid and Medicaid Waiver programs. She mastered navigating Medicaid waivers, appealing unfair decisions, finding grants, and unlocking funding families didn’t know existed. As word spread, other parents began turning to her for help. She didn’t just advocate for her own child; she became a lifeline for others.
Yet, she also saw how broken the system was. Family caregivers were underpaid and overworked. Agencies often failed to grasp families’ true needs. And the very people doing the hardest work were often the least supported.
That’s why Julie founded Family Solutions Home Care.
Her goal was simple: to create a company that pays caregivers fairly, reduces red tape, and truly puts families first. Family Solutions was built for people like her — families who rely on HCBS, who are tired of being dismissed or ignored, and who simply want consistent, quality care.
Since then, Family Solutions has grown into more than an agency. It’s become a trusted partner for Indiana families — and a platform for pushing back when the system falls short.
Julie’s advocacy soon expanded beyond her own home. She joined a team of mothers to co-found Indiana Families United for Care, a grassroots coalition fighting to protect access to Medicaid services for individuals with disabilities. In recognition of their work, Julie and each founding member were honored with the Family Advocate Award by The Arc of Indiana.
At Family Solutions, we don’t just understand the system — we’ve lived it. We’re here to make it easier and to fight for families every step of the way.
