Family Solutions Home Care was founded by Julie, a local mother from Fort Wayne who intimately understands the joys and challenges of caring for a child with special needs. Julie’s personal experience shaped the mission of the company—to support other families facing similar challenges with compassion, dedication, and practical solutions.
Starting a Personal Service Agency that provides Non-Medical Care for people on Medicaid Waivers, was not initially part of Julie's planned career path, but it is where her journey lead her.
Julie completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science at Purdue Fort Wayne, followed by a Master of Arts Degree in Actuarial Science from Ball State University. She successfully passed two actuarial exams and gained experience through an internship at Lincoln Financial Group. However, her life took a different turn when she became a mother to a child with special needs.
After becoming a mother to a child with complex care needs, Julie's priorities shifted towards her son's well-being. For two years, she dedicated herself to providing his round-the-clock care and support. Finally, a small amount of respite time became available, allowing Julie to explore opportunities outside of her caregiving role. Taking advantage of the flexibility offered by her mother's insurance agency, Julie began working whenever she could manage the time. This arrangement allowed her to balance her responsibilities as a caregiver while earning income and engaging with other adults.
For 8 years, Julie dedicated herself to working at Shelter Insurance alongside her mother. Her son, now 13 years old, has been a source of inspiration and growth for her. Throughout her journey, Julie's resourcefulness and determination have allowed her to make the most of the A&D Waiver and other funding sources.
She has been able to secure grant money to cover the cost of a hotel stay when doing out-of-state physical therapy over a period of 2 weeks, and also successfully found and applied to several grants to over the cost of an accessible wheelchair modification. Recognizing the financial strain that comes with caring for a loved one, she has become adept at utilizing available resources.
Some of the most notable equipment and services she has been able to obtain:
Activity Chair that was initially denied by insurance
Pest Control Services to address an ant problem at home
Gas Mileage Reimbursement for out of town medical appointments
Bathroom modification
Accessible Vehicle Transfer Seat
Plane tickets for a medical appointment in Colorado
Hippo Therapy Sessions
Julie’s experience and advocacy within the special needs community soon led professionals to seek her guidance in navigating these resources. Her passion for helping families access the services and equipment they need grew stronger, and it was this drive that led to the creation of Family Solutions Home Care.
Recognizing the challenges and low wages within the Paid Caregiver Program for individuals on Medicaid Waivers, Julie set out to create a company that would prioritize fair compensation for caregivers. By reducing operating costs and focusing on the well-being of both families and caregivers, she established Family Solutions Home Care—a company built on empathy, experience, and a commitment to doing right by those who need it most.
Starting Family Solutions Home Care has been more than just a business for Julie—it’s a labor of love. Motivated by her own experiences as a special needs parent, Julie’s mission is to provide better options for families, improve caregiver compensation, and ultimately make life easier for those who need it most.
